[figure 8-1] Begin your approach to the pattern while still 5 miles out.

If you fly a high-performance retractable, give thought to your pattern speed as you cross your 5 mile landmark. Retractables decelerate slowly, so reduce power to 55 percent at 5 miles out. This gives your airplane a chance to slow to gear-extension speed as the downwind leg draws near.

Step one of your landing concludes with the airplane over a landmark 5 miles out, at pattern altitude, carrying 55 percent power, and in position to approach the downwind leg at a 45-degree entry.

Entering the Traffic Pattern

If you fly a retractable-gear airplane, lower the wheels at one-half mile before turning downwind. This helps decelerate the streamlined airplane to flap-operating range as you enter the traffic pattern (Figure 8-2).
